SpatialAI: Towards a Single Algorithm for Intelligent Robots

Dr. Edgar Sucar is a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Oxford in the Visual Geometry Group (VGG). His research lies in developing algorithms that allow a robot to have a 3D understanding of the environment so that they can interact intelligently with it. He completed his PhD at Imperial College with Prof. Andrew Davison, where he developed innovative SLAM algorithms such as NodeSLAM and iMAP for creating a 3D map of a space with neural networks as underlying representations for them. He also worked at the robotics startup SLAMCore where he helped implement core algorithms for industry robotics.

SpatialAI: Towards a Single Algorithm for Intelligent Robots

SpatialAI is the development of algorithms for a robot to understand its 3D surroundings so that it can act intelligently and perform useful tasks. In this talk we will explore the search for a single algorithm that would allow a robot to understand what it is seeing and perform a wide set of useful functions. We will look at the research developed at Imperial College in developing new ways to represent and compress 3D maps, and how this automatically leads to more useful representations of a space. We will also explore new research developed at the University of Oxford in understanding the 3D dynamics of objects in video. Finally we will take a look at the future, at how GenerativeAI methods are coming together towards a unified model for 3D understanding.
